Presidential Message

Alamo ASHRAE,

March is already here? I can’t believe how quickly time passes. The next 2 months with be packed with great ASRHAE events; come enjoy! MEP engineer discussion, ice hockey, pool HVAC systems, golf, new SA code adoption, and a CRC are all in our future. Call ASHRAE what you want, but you can’t call it boring!

First let’s reflect. Thursday, Feb 27th was our 2nd annual UTSA Round Table which was another big success. 44 students showed up to learn what ASHRAE and the HVAC industry can offer them. The students gave great feedback and “absolutely loved it.” – Quote from their Chapter President, Gentry Colvin. I believe our influence on these young people will positively impact our industry and community. Huge thanks to the members who came out! Aaron Caldwell, Daron Johnson, Ransom Lockhart, Rene Colunga, Rey Gutierrez, Shannon Novak, Steven Lipe, Tae Hwang, and I gave these students a glimpse about work as an engineer, contractor, sales rep, and owner.

Without refrigeration, ice hockey would suck. It would be limited to winter time on northern lakes. Without refrigeration, do you know what else would suck? Beer. That’s why we will be celebrating refrigeration with ice hockey and cold brew. Join us March 13th at 4:30 at the ATT Center box office to take a tour of the refrigeration equipment used to make the ice rink; then stay for the Rampage game and $1 beers. $20 gets you the tour and a ticket behind the visitor’s bench! Contact Rey Gutierrez to pre-pay ($25 at the door) rgutierrez@versar.com 210-269-4827.

March 17th is our next chapter meeting. CHANGE OF LOCATION: We will be meeting at The Quarry Golf Club and the topic will be Natatorium Design and Dehumidification. ASHRAE Distinguished Lecture, Ralph Kittler, P.E. will discuss the many critical system design aspects of a Natatorium which include the fundamentals of psychrometrics, dew point, humidity/condensation control, moisture load calculation, air distribution, ventilation requirements, water chemistry, and how to optimize your operating conditions to minimize operating costs. Continue reading the newsletter for more detail.

April will bring our chapter’s main fund raiser – the beloved golf tournament. Get your teams and sponsorships signed up now! We’ll be driving greens soon (the wrong green). April’s chapter meeting will cover our city’s new 2015 IMC adoption and a COSA code official will inform us of all the major changes. This talk should be a “must attend” for all HVAC engineers. April 23-25 will host Region XIII’s CRC in Fort Worth, TX. Read on to learn more about this great event.

As you can see – we have an action packed spring, with a nice mix of learning, networking, and fun. Please come participate and enjoy these events; it’s your chapter.

        Respectfully,

Wes Weissgarber
